The Kingdom’s leading mobile service providers are reportedly accelerating the rollout of 5G services. To date, 1,494 5G base stations have been installed across the country.
A February 12 report from the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia (TRC) noted the growing importance of high-speed internet in the age of the digital economy.
It also provided a breakdown of the progress of the three companies, Smart Axiata Co., Ltd. (Smart) and Viettel (Cambodia) Ltd. (Metphone) and CamGSM Plc. (CellCard), since the January 1 launch of 5G.
The TRC noted that Smart has deployed 674 5G base stations in key areas in Phnom Penh and several provincial capitals, including Kratie, Kandal, Kep, Kampot, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, Takeo, Tboung Khmum, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Prey Veng, Sihanoukville, Mondul Kiri, Svay Rieng and Siem Reap.
Metphone has deployed 531 in Phnom Penh and Kratie, Kandal, Kampot, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, Takeo, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Prey Veng, Pursat, Sihanoukville, Mondul Kiri, Ratanak Kiri, Svay Rieng, Stung Treng, Siem Reap, Otdar Meanchey, Kep, Tboung Khmum, Preah Vihear and Pailin provinces.
CellCard has deployed 289 5G base stations in Phnom Penh and Kandal province.
“Currently, all three operators are actively accelerating the rollout of 5G services, with a primary focus on high-speed internet services for both mobile users and home users (5G Home Broadband), as well as providing high-level entertainment experiences and technological solutions for enterprises and high-bandwidth connectivity for digital businesses, and continuing to expand 4G coverage,” explained the TRC.
“These developments will enhance Cambodia’s competitiveness in the era of the digital economy,” it added.
The TRC encouraged all operators to build additional 5G base stations to ensure broader nationwide coverage. The regulator noted that it will continue to monitor and strengthen 4G service quality to ensure stable and highly efficient connectivity.
