Phnom Penh governor Khuong Sreng has declared that the municipal authorities will strive to transform the capital into a “white zone” free of online scam activities, by March 30.
He explained that achieving this target will require all district authorities to clean up their respective territories.
Sreng shared the ambitious goal during a February 11 meeting at Phnom Penh City Hall to review the progress of the current crackdown on technology-based fraud, or online scams, according to the Ministry of Interior.
“To eliminate technology-based fraud and online scams from the local area, we must clean out the scammer ringleaders. If not eliminated, they will continue to spawn and multiply. The governors of all 14 districts must regularly inspect their localities and prepare forces to cooperate and monitor the actual situation,” Sreng was quoted as saying.
“This work must be strict and thorough. This campaign aims to completely clean up technology-based fraud crimes in Phnom Penh by March 30,” he added.
He described the current crackdowns as “hot campaign that demands total elimination to become a white zone”.
He instructed the authorities of all 14 districts to identify suspicious locations. They must work consistently and persistently, “like steady rain” he said, utilising all of their skills to confidently ensure that no technology-based fraud crimes remain in their localities after March 30.
The governor also instructed authorities to continue maintaining public order, and to provide effective public services to local citizens.
