The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, together with the Ministry of Information, has issued a public advisory calling on citizens to immediately stop sharing social media content originating from Thailand or unverified sources, amid what it described as an ongoing situation affecting Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ministries warned that commenting, sharing or reacting to articles, photos, videos or other digital content from Thai social media accounts or unclear sources effectively contributes — often unknowingly — to the spread of Thai-origin narratives and fake news.
“Such actions have accelerated the circulation of disinformation, falsehoods and incitement that undermine public morale and risk overshadowing factual information disseminated through official channels of the Royal Government, relevant ministries, institutions and Cambodian media outlets,” they said.
The advisory noted that unverified content circulating online has increasingly been picked up and reused by artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT and Gemini, amplifying its reach and creating confusion internationally.
According to the ministries, this has led parts of the global audience to mistake false narratives for factual reporting, while such content is being used to obscure what Cambodia describes as aggressive actions by Thailand against its sovereignty.
“To counter the spread of disinformation, the ministries urged the public to report and block Facebook pages, accounts and other social media platforms linked to Thai sources or lacking clear verification,” said the advisory.
Users were also encouraged to express disapproval through reaction tools on such content to limit its online traction.
Media professionals and audiovisual practitioners were reminded to strictly adhere to journalistic ethics and professional standards.
At the same time, the two ministries encouraged content creators and members of the public who value justice and peace to continue producing and sharing content that reflects Cambodia’s voice and factual position with the international community through major social media platforms.
The ministries expressed hope that journalists, media practitioners and social media users alike will comply with the advisory, contributing to the promotion of accurate, high-quality information and helping ensure a trustworthy and secure information environment in support of national interests.
