The Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, has been recognised by BBC Travel as one of the world’s top 20 best travel destinations for 2026.
Cambodian tourism experts say this is a positive sign for the country’s tourism sector, as it helps promote the potential of Cambodia’s tourist destinations to the global community.
According to the BBC Travel website, the list aims to highlight “destinations that offer incredible experiences”, while “using tourism to support local communities, protect the environment and preserve their unique cultural heritage”.
BBC Travel noted that Phnom Penh is moving forward confidently toward 2026 with the opening of Techo International Airport, the largest infrastructure project in Cambodia. The modern facility, featuring a large silver Buddha statue, is expected to improve flight connectivity in 2026, with new direct routes from Phnom Penh to the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, China and Japan, making air travel more convenient for travellers.
BBC Travel described Phnom Penh as “having its moment” in the sun after long being over showed by Siem reap.
Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, told The Post on December 18 that this is positive news for Cambodia’s tourism sector.
“Being included in BBC Travel’s list of the world’s top 20 tourist destinations will bring many positive benefits to the tourism sector, as more people will talk about Cambodia’s tourist destinations. This becomes an important form of promotion when tourists are choosing where to travel, as they often look at such rankings,” she said.
“It will help increase awareness and interest among tourists worldwide. This is a positive sign for Cambodia’s tourism industry,” she added.
In addition to Phnom Penh, other destinations on the BBC Travel list include Abu Dhabi, the Colchagua Valley, the Cook Islands, the Hebrides, Ishikawa, Oregon Coast …and the Komodo Islands.
