The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence has rejected accusations by their Thai counterparts regarding their claim of a landmine explosion on December 2, in which they accused Cambodian forces of planting new mines. The Ministry deemed the claims “fake news”.
The ministry stated on December 3 that the official Facebook page of the Thai Second Army Region published a report regarding a December 2 landmine explosion in the Huay Ta Maria area at 2.20pm.
Just as in previous instances, the Thai military alleged that the mine was newly laid by Cambodia.
The ministry stated that, based on information received from Cambodia’s Military Region 4 stationed nearby, no sound of a landmine explosion was heard at the time and location claimed by the Thais.
The ministry considered the Thai claim to have been made “with the intention of misleading the international community and concealing their ambitions to illegally encroach upon Cambodia’s legitimate sovereign territory”.
“Since becoming a state party to the Ottawa Convention, Cambodia has always adhered to its principles and obligations under international law, never planting new mines that threaten the security and safety of humanity. Cambodia also calls on the Thai side to immediately stop using the mine issue, which is false information, as a pretext to encroach upon Cambodia’s legitimate sovereignty,” it said.
It added that Cambodia, as well as the ministry itself, is committed to respecting the Joint Statement on Peace between Cambodia and Thailand, signed on October 26, 2025, particularly regarding the prevention of fake news or disinformation.
