The Banteay Meanchey provincial administration has clarified that the situation in Prey Chan and Chouk Chey villages remains calm, noting that contrary to what some have claimed on social media, no new razor wire barricades have been installed by Thai forces.
In a statement released today, November 21, the administration explained that it has observed the reposting of old photographs and videos of the installation of razor wire in the two villages, located in O’Beichoan commune, O’Chrov district. It had also seen images from other locations, with some posters claiming they were taken in the two villages.
It clarified that the videos and images represent old information, and in some cases fake news, warning that spreading such content creates confusion among the public.
“The Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration wishes to underscore that regarding the situation in Prey Chan and Chouk Chey villages, there are currently no new developments,” it said.
It also confirmed that a Joint Cambodia-Thailand Survey Team is continuing fieldwork, using drones for aerial photography. Once this work has been satisfactorily concluded, both parties will proceed with the installation of temporary border markers between border posts 42 and 47, located within the geography of O’Beichoan commune of Cambodia, and Sa Kaeo province of Thailand.
This work is being carried out in accordance with the technical instructions agreed upon by both parties during the Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), held on October 21-22. During the meeting, both sides agreed to avoid any provocative activities that could affect the work and mandate of the JBC, particularly actions that increase tension or violate Article 5 of the MoU 2000, the release noted.
“The provincial administration appeals to the public and social media users to cease the reposting of old images and videos, or images from other locations, and distorting them as current events. Please do not believe or further disseminate photos, images, videos or old and fake information that has already been refuted,” added the release.
