The chairman of the Legislation and Justice Commission of the National Assembly (NA) has instructed the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court to expedite the resolution of priority cases and handle online scam cases strictly and fairly.
Ang Vong Vathana, chairman of the commission, known as Commission 6, visited the provincial court and prosecutor’s office on October 28 to study the implementation of the law and hear reports and requests from the court. His visit aimed to find collaborative solutions to challenges which are effective and efficient, according to an NA statement.
During the visit, court president Kao Vandy reported that over the past nine months, the court had prioritised four types of case: Drug cases, traffic cases, civil registration cases and cases involving juvenile delinquency.
In addition, the court has focused its attention on crimes related to online scam operations.
Vathana, a former Minister of Justice, instructed the provincial court and the regional appeal court to establish action plans that will support the resolution of all criminal and civil cases, both old and new, as quickly as possible.
He added that in addition to the four priority case types, the court must pay close attention to online scam cases, emphasising that “action must be taken strictly and fairly”, according to the NA.
From June 27 to October 22, the authorities sent a total of 80 suspected online scam “masterminds” and their accomplices to courts nationwide. The 80 individuals were among several thousand who were detained in the latest campaign to suppress online scam activities, according to the Secretariat of the Committee for Combating Technology Crimes.
