A South Korean parliamentary delegation has acknowledged the efforts of Cambodian authorities and relevant parties in combating technology-based fraud in Cambodia during an inspection of sites linked to online scams.
Led by Kim Seok-ki, a Member of Parliament for Foreign Affairs and National Unification, the delegation inspected the compound of the Sopheakmith Residence company, located in Trapeang Khpos village, Lumphong commune, Bati district, Takeo province, on the afternoon of October 23.
The site was previously raided by Cambodian law enforcement agencies in an anti-scam operation which saw more than 60 Korean nationals detained. They were subsequently deported home, where the majority are now facing charges.
“The delegation of Korean lawmakers praised the Cambodian authorities for their continuous crackdown on online scam crimes, which demonstrates the high commitment of the Royal Government of Cambodia, as well as the strict implementation of measures to prevent online scam offenses, and the swift repatriation of Korean nationals,” said a statement from the Secretariat of the Committee for Combating Technology Crimes (CCTC).
The Korean delegation expressed gratitude to the Kingdom’s law enforcement forces and requested continued operations to crack down on criminals and rescue Korean victims who have been defrauded by the criminals behind online crimes, it added.
The CCTC said Kim Seok-ki will also urge South Korean law enforcement agencies to work with their Cambodian counterparts to suppress online crimes.
On October 22, the visiting delegation observed a raid on a suspected scam centre in Phnom Penh’s Por Sen Chey district. 57 South Koreans were among the foreigners detained during the raid.
