The US Department of State has shared its optimism about the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting between Thailand and Cambodia, noting that it looks forward to a constructive outcome. US President Donald Trump will witness the signing of a document which was agreed upon by the foreign ministers of the two neighbouring kingdoms.
“The United States thanks Malaysia for hosting a productive meeting with Thailand and Cambodia on October 17. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to taking confidence-building measures to reduce tensions along their shared border,” said state department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, via the department’s website.
Yesterday, Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, shared details of the peace agreement document that was reached after quadrilateral discussions between Cambodia, Thailand, the US and Malaysia. Among the points agreed on are a major military deescalation, with the withdrawal of troops and heavy weapons from the border.
“This is an important step towards restoring trust between the neighbouring countries. The US will continue to play a meaningful role in facilitating dialogue as both sides work together to promote lasting peace,” said Pigott.
“As part of that effort, the US looks forward to a constructive meeting of the General Border Committee between Thailand and Cambodia,” he added.
