The Secretariat of the Ad Hoc Commission to Combat Online Crimes has released the results of its latest campaign to crack down on internet crimes.
From June 27 to October 14, under the guidance of the secretariat, Cambodian authorities raided 92 locations across the Kingdom.
During this period, they detained 3,455 suspects from 20 nationalities. The detainees included Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Indian, Bangladeshi, Thai, South Korean, Pakistani, Nepali, Malaysian, Japanese, Myanmar, Filipino, Lao, Cameroonian, Nigerian, Ugandan, Sierra Leonean, Mongolian and Russian citizens.
According to the secretariat, 10 of the cases saw 75 “ringleaders” and senior accomplices, from operations in Phnom Penh, Kandal, Preah Sihanouk and Kampot, sent to court.
“These cases involved online fraud, murder and human trafficking,” it said.
“Additionally, 2,825 foreigners, including 476 women, were deported from Cambodia, while authorities also rescued victims from trafficking and dismantled fraud networks and human trafficking dens,” it added.
The secretariat noted that the busts were the result of its cooperation with partner organisations and law enforcement officials from other nations.
All seized materials, including mobile phones, computers, other electronic devices and passports, have been seized as evidence. They are examined to determine if clues can be gathered that will lead to the “masterminds” behind the operations or identify organised criminal networks, whether inside or outside of Cambodia.
During the launch of the current campaign, Prime Minister Hun Manet warned all government officials and institutions that a failure to support the crackdown will result in transfer or dismissal.
