The Ministry of Interior has instructed the Kingdom’s National Police to provide the South Korean embassy with a detailed report on a recent high-profile case involving the death of a young South Korean man, at the hands of a Chinese online criminal gang he was reportedly connected with.
In an October 14 press release, ministry spokesperson Touch Sokhak reiterated the details of the death of 22-year-old Korean national Park Minho, who was found dead last August in Kampot province. He noted that three Chinese nationals have been detained, while a manhunt continues for two others.
The case drew a strong reaction from the South Korean government, with the president exerting diplomatic pressure on Cambodia to protect the security of visiting Koreans.
“The interior ministry’s judicial police are actively searching for the two more accomplices of the criminals already in custody,” said Sokhak.
“Furthermore, investigations are being expanded to find the origin of the initial crime scene, and identify any other involved parties, if any. They are working closely with the South Korean embassy in Cambodia,” he added.
He explained that the ministry is currently preparing a detailed report for the embassy. At the same time, the ministry has instructed the General Commissariat of National Police to invite representatives of the South Korean Embassy to listen to a direct explanation and present additional updates.
According to Sokhak, Prime Minister Hun Manet’s government is committed to preventing, curbing and suppressing all types of transnational crimes and technology-based scams.
He explained that combatting these types of crimes require nations to work hand-in-hand, in a coordinated and equal manner, such as through educational campaigns that inform the public about possible, types of crimes, tricks used by criminals and ways to protect themselves.
