It was confirmed today that Thai influencer and nationalist Kan Jomphalang is behind a psychological warfare operation against the villagers of Prey Chan village. On the nights of October 10 and 11, loudspeakers broadcast eerie sounds, like dogs howling and human screams, across the border into the village, in Banteay Meanchey province.
Both Thai the Thai political and military leadership have come out in support of the operations, which reportedly added a large movie screen this evening, October 12.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said today that he was surprised that the influencer appeared to be doing more for the Thai people than the state. The prime minister also announced that he would visit the area soon, according to Thai outlet Khaosod English.
The commander of the Burapha Task Force in Sa Kaeo province also publicly affirmed his support for Jomphalang’s actions, suggesting that as they are playing on Thai territory, it is no concern of Cambodia’s.
This is not the first time the famous influencer has involved himself in the border disputes. In late August, he led a convoy of 14 septic tank pump trucks to the same site, vowing to spray effluent on protesting Cambodian civilians. Thai authorities prevented him from doing so.
Cambodia has filed complaints and notified all relevant UN agencies of the disruptive noise attacks from the Thai side of the border.
On the night of October 12, it was reported that the Thai side continued its unusual activities, switching from playing loud bass speakers to screening movies in Prey Chan village.
