As flight operations at Phnom Penh International Airport cease on September 8, Techo International Airport is ready to welcome flights from the following day, September 9.
Before official operations begin, a final and comprehensive test flight, or “full flight demonstration”, according to Sinn Chanserey Vutha, spokesperson for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation SSCA).
“September 9 marks the final test flight, or full flight demonstration, meaning a complete trial run. It is different from previous tests that focused on individual components like equipment, communication systems, or runways and taxiways,” he said.
“This test is as realistic as an actual flight, including check-in, security checks, immigration processes, boarding at the waiting area and departure. Upon return, all procedures will mirror a real landing, from touchdown to passengers exiting the terminal,” he added.
The September 9 event will mark the official start of operations at the new airport, featuring a ceremonial water salute for aircraft and a welcome for tourists with a Chhayam traditional dance.
The official inauguration of the airport is scheduled for October 20, and will be presided over by Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Techo International Airport spans 2,600 hectares, covering Prek Sleng commune in Kandal Stung district, Kandal province, and part of Bati district, in Takeo province. Construction of the category 4F airport cost more than $2 billion.
