Trade between Australia and Cambodia continues to grow, with Cambodian business Royal Trust Trading Co., Ltd. (RTT) dispatching its first shipment of nuts and dried fruit to Australia on August 14.
This latest export deal is the result of the Australian government’s backing, through the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) programme, which offers specialised support for Cambodian agribusinesses with targeted export readiness and market linkage assistance.
The shipment consists of 12 tonnes of nuts and dried fruit, including cashew nuts, dried mangoes, dried jackfruit, banana and taro chips. A second shipment is already being planned, with an expanded product range and increased volume, according to a joint release from the Australian embassy, Ministry of Commerce and RTT.
The dispatch was celebrated by representatives from the embassy, the ministry, RTT and Khmer Enterprise, and underscored growing Cambodia–Australia cooperation to boost trade and enhance the competitiveness of Cambodian exports, it added.
“Australia is partnering with Cambodia and Cambodian businesses to boost trade competitiveness and break into new markets. These efforts will help support Cambodia’s ambitions to successfully graduate from Least Developed Country status,” said Australian ambassador Derek Yip.
“They will also increase bilateral trade between our two nations. We are committed to deepening our economic partnership with Cambodia and facilitating Cambodia’s integration into regional and global value chains,” he added.
Samheng Bora, commerce ministry secretary of state, also attended the event.
He described the collaborative efforts to boost the export of Cambodian-made products as vital to advancing the Kingdom’s agro-processing sector, especially in today’s uncertain global trade environment.
He thanked the Australian government for making the export of Cambodian dried fruit to Australia possible.
“Along with the dedication of our government, private sector and other key stakeholders, I am confident that our economic resilience will continue to endure and strengthen,” he added.
RTT Chairman Chhin Sophal also expressed his gratitude for Australia’s assistance, as well as the support of the ministry.
“This shipment demonstrates the growing capability of local enterprises to meet global demand. We are confident that this is just the start, and that more Cambodian products will soon find their way onto Australian shelves and beyond,” he said.
The release noted that bilateral trade between Cambodia and Australia reached $1.1 billion in 2024, over 70 per cent of which was comprised of Cambodian exports to Australia.
