The Cambodian ambassador to South Korea has thanked Prime Minister Hun Manet for introducing passport services to Cambodian citizens living and working in South Korea, regarding it as an excellent gift for the new year. In a video clip on the morning of January 11, ambassador Chring Botum Rangsay said that in the three months since Manet initiated the idea, officials had worked hard to make the passport service available in South Korea from January 10 onwards. In some good news for dog lovers, but bad news for those who like to eat dog meat, a senior official has proposed a public campaign to pass a law against the consumption of mankind’s best friend. In a January 10 social media post, Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) director Heng Ratana urged a public movement to end the dog meat trade in Cambodia, noting that this would preserve the traditions and culture of the Kingdom, while also respecting animal rights. The Hospitality Kampuchea (HoKa) training programme is set to expand its activities into Koh Kong and Kampong Chhnang provinces from this year onwards, in exciting news for the younger residents of the provinces who are interested in pursuing careers in tourism and hospitality. The Ministry of Information has banned the inappropriate promotion of alcoholic beverages. This includes advertisements that promise rewards, or any other promotion that encourages people to consume more alcohol in pursuit of prizes. In a January 9 notification to all media and advertising companies, information minister Neth Pheaktra also banned the use of advertising language or slogans that promote the excessive consumption of alcohol. “The ministry also bans the use of women and girls to promote alcoholic products, as it affects their rights and dignity,” said the notice. In just over four months since the August inauguration of the seventh-mandate government, more than 50 police officers have been dismissed, demoted or transferred for misconduct. Specialists from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts are planning to investigate the remaining Cambodian artefacts in the extensive collection of the New York-based Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET). The museum has already agreed to return a batch of 14 ancient Cambodian artefacts, said a December 15 ministry press release. The pieces, described as “national treasures”, will be stored alongside 27 others which were repatriated to the Kingdom in July last year. A Russian destroyer has docked in Preah Sihanouk province for a four-day visit from November 26-29 to foster bilateral cooperation with Cambodia. The National Committee for Maritime Security stated on its social media on November 26 that the Admiral Panteleyev 548 weighs 7,595 tonnes, is 162.8 metres in length, has a beam of 19.02 metres and a draft of 6.2 metres.
