The government of Japan has approved almost $18 million in grants to expand a major Phnom Penh water supply system and establish a land registration network. Japanese ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn took part in a March 25 exchange of notes ceremony for the two projects. The National Police carried out large scale raids in Poipet town on March 22, as part of an operation which targeted two illegal online scam operations. A total of 63 Thai nationals were taken into custody during the raids, including two children. Some members of the public have expressed dismay at what they have called poor communication from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), after a number of citizens were unable to register for NSSF cards due to new requirements. Self-employed people are now required to obtain an “informal economy worker certificate”, not in itself a difficult task, but one which say they were unaware of. An exchange of notes ceremony was held this morning, March 20, for the grants, which have a total value of $10.4 million.
