The National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) has announced that less than 0.1 per cent of the civil servants who were subjected to drug testing in 2024 returned positive tests. Of the more than 110,000 civil servants tested, just 100 were found to have narcotics in their system. The success of preventive measures resulted in a significant drop in the number of reported dengue fever cases in Cambodia for 2024. Initially estimated to reach up to 75,000 cases, the actual number dropped to nearly 19,000, with 46 deaths recorded. According to the Ministry of Health, the 75,000 figure was based on the traditional five-year cycle of dengue outbreaks. Cambodia exported a total of 651,522 tonnes of rice in 2024, generating $491.19 million in revenue, according to a January 10 press release from the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF). According to the statement, 57 licensed rice exporters shipped their produce to 68 nations. The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court on January 8 has sentenced ten Chinese men to life imprisonment for their involvement in the production, storage and trafficking of 14 tonnes of illegal narcotics and chemical precursors. Cambodia generated over $63 million in tax revenue from gambling operations and games of chance in 2024, marking an increase of approximately 85% over 2023. Of the total, over $62.1 million came from casinos, while more than $1 million was derived from other game of chance activities, according to data collected by the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia (CGMC). Starting this year, September 24, Constitution Day, will no longer be a regular public holiday for the Kingdom’s civil servants. Government officials at the national and sub-national levels have been mandated to organise ceremonies to show “respect for the Constitution”, both in Phnom Penh and all 24 provinces.
