The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries regards the breeding of animals as an important sub-sector in improving the livelihoods of the Cambodian people and a driver of the national economy. The sector grew 13 per cent in 2022.

Speaking at the “New Concepts for the Cambodian Agriculture Sector” conference on January 5, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Dith Tina said the increase was in response to local demand.

He added that previously, Cambodian farmers raised animals at the family level and sold them for income. Now, the industry is growing, and requires industrial production of animal feed. Last year, 1.67 million families raised a total of 26.56 million animals.

He said that he would push for the improvement of agriculture, with animal husbandry also in the focus.

President of the Cambodian Livestock Association Srun Pov sad that the increase followed last year’s halt on animal imports. Originally, it grew to meet local demand, but now there is a surplus.

Pov said that pig and chicken farmers are currently facing problems such as the high price feed, and fuel, spurred on by the war in Ukraine. Current prices for pig and chicken are low, compounding the problem.

“Currently, the price for a live pig is 7,000 riel per kilogramme, while chickens are worth 5,000 riel per kilogramme. These prices do not justify the cost of raising them,” he added.

Pov encouraged the relevant authorities to ensure that only high-quality animal products are imported, to ensure that local producers remain motivated.

As there is a surplus of animals being produced, the ministry urged farmers to reduce production to a point that guaranteed food security at the family level. Farmers should put their efforts into other sub-sectors which will address the needs of the market.
