Louise Mushikiwabo, secretary-general of the International Organization of La Francophonie, has confirmed plans to visit displacement sites along the Cambodian-Thai border during her current official visit to Cambodia.

The announcement as she paid a courtesy call on Senate president Hun Sen, acting head of state, on the morning of March 2, at the Solidarity Palace.

According to a Senate spokesperson, Mushikiwabo said she had been closely monitoring the situation along the border and understood its impact on affected communities.

“Hun Sen considered her visit to Cambodia, particularly her planned visit to displacement sites, as a clear demonstration of her support for peace and her opposition to war,” they said.

Hun Sen reiterated that Cambodia is continuing to pursue peaceful solutions and negotiations as the means to resolve the dispute with Thailand.

During the meeting, both sides also discussed preparations for the Francophonie Summit, which Cambodia will host in November.

Hun Sen called on leaders of member states not to be concerned about the border situation, stressing that the current dispute will not affect security or preparations for the upcoming meeting.

Mushikiwabo pledged her full support for the organisation of the summit. 

She also praised Cambodia’s development progress and its active role within the Francophonie framework. She noted that Cambodia is an engaged member and has the capacity to ensure the success of the forthcoming forum.

Her planned visit to displacement sites along the border is widely viewed as a humanitarian gesture and a sign of international concern for civilians affected by tensions linked to the border dispute.
