Suzuki Hideo, Japanese ambassador for Mekong Cooperation, will pay official visits to Malaysia — the 2025 ASEAN chair — Cambodia and Thailand from August 25 to 29. During his trip, he is scheduled to meet with relevant officials and exchange views on easing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
According to an August 22 press release from the Japanese embassy, the government of Japan believes that a sound relationship between Cambodia and Thailand is extremely important for stability and development in the region, and has been promoting efforts toward de-escalation of the situation, including encouraging steady implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
On August 15, the Japanese government delivered emergency grant aids worth about $1.8 million to respond to urgent humanitarian needs in the Cambodia-Thailand border area.
Through this cooperation, Japan will provide humanitarian assistance such as daily necessities and temporary shelters, via the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The Japanese government strongly supports the immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, expressing hope for a rapid restoration of peace and reaffirming its commitment to alleviating the suffering of affected populations.
Japanese ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi, together with defence attaché Colonel Hara Takashi, have visited the border areas and were reportedly “heartbroken” by the extent of the damage. The embassy is making efforts to restore peace and aid the affected people of Cambodia.
