The Cambodia Billiards Sports Federation (CBSF) has decided not to send any representatives to the 33rd SEA Games, which will be held in Thailand in December.

The federation also announced it will not participate in any other events in Thailand this year.

According to a November 18 statement from the CBSF, there are two primary reasons for the decision.

The first is security and safety Concerns. Chum Kosal, federation president, stated that the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand does not provide sufficient guarantees to ensure the safety of Cambodian athletes. He cited the ongoing border disputes, the continued closure of border checkpoints and incidents of cross-border violence where Thai military forces have attacked Cambodian civilians. These concerns have raised serious security fears for the Cambodian delegation.

The second is a question of national integrity and morality. Kosal also emphasised that, as representatives of the Cambodian nation and people, the federation cannot participate in a sporting event while Cambodian people are suffering and losing their lives due to activities along the border. He explained that taking part in such an event under these circumstances would be morally unacceptable and would overlook the suffering of the Cambodian people.

The statement also clarified that all sports events held in Thailand in the current situation will be considered as non-participatory for the federation. No athletes, officials or other representatives from the CBSF will be traveling to Thailand.

Moreover, the federation warned that it would not be responsible for any individuals, including Cambodian athletes or others with billiard knowledge, who choose to participate in any event in Thailand on their own accord. These individuals will not be representing Cambodia or the federation in an official capacity.

The CBSF stressed that they would reconsider participation in future events only if full security and safety guarantees are provided, and the border situation between the two countries returns to peace and normalcy.

The federation remains committed to developing billiards in Cambodia and is hopeful for the opportunity to compete in the future in an environment of friendship, unity and lasting peace.

For context, during the 32nd SEA Games held in Cambodia in 2023, the Cambodian billiards team won 2 gold medals and 4 silver medals, ranking 4th out of 9 participating countries. The gold medals were earned by Sruong Pheavy in 3-cushion carom billiards and by Men Sophanith and Suon Chhay in men’s snooker doubles.

Several other national sports federations continue to train and await final decisions regarding their participation in the SEA Games. However, as of now, there has been no update on the final decision from the Thai authorities.
