The Kouprey, Cambodia’s national football team, were unable to not break their historical record against Hong Kong, after the two sides drew 1–1 in an international friendly at Hong Kong Stadium last night. The result means that in the eight meetings between the two teams, Hong Kong has won five and drawn three, with Cambodia yet to secure a victory.
However, winger-turned-defender Nick Taylor expressed dissatisfaction with the Hong Kong Football Association, accusing them of being unprofessional in their handling of Cambodia’s arrival, which he said put the team at unnecessary risk of injury.
Posting on his official Facebook page after Thursday night’s match, Taylor wrote:
“The team worked incredibly hard today. But regardless, the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) was completely unprofessional by not providing a police escort to the stadium”.
“We arrived late and had only 15 minutes to warm up, which could have put our players at risk of injury. Even so, I’m truly proud of what we did on the pitch tonight,” he added.
The international friendly was delayed by approximately six minutes — an issue that may have stemmed from Cambodia’s late arrival at the stadium. However, the delay did not materially affect the overall flow of the match.
Cambodia, having had only one day of training together, showed a lack of cohesion, especially in ball control and passing, which allowed Hong Kong players to regain possession easily. As a result, the home side applied intense pressure on Cambodia’s defensive line and created several strong scoring chances. Many of these were denied by Cambodia’s defenders, particularly goalkeeper Hul Kimhuy, who made multiple crucial saves.
Even so, Kimhuy was unable to stop a close-range shot by forward Wong Wai in the 31st minute. Despite this, just two minutes later, captain Sareth Krya restored the balance for Cambodia, scoring from a header off a corner delivered by Nhean Socheata.
With the score level at 1–1 after the first half, Hong Kong escalated their attacks in the second half, but neither side found the net again. Cambodian fans were left disappointed by missed opportunities from striker Sare Ty and Nieto Rondon, who each had two good chances in the final 15 minutes.
In the final moments of the match, Hong Kong defender Van Nunes nearly scored a dramatic winner after pouncing on a rebound from Kimhuy inside the penalty area, but his shot struck the post.
Ultimately, the match ended in a draw. Although Cambodia has yet to achieve a victory over Hong Kong, the result was a fair reflection of the team’s lack of preparation. A major positive was the fact that despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Hong Kong were only able to score once.
