Long-term Phnom Penh resident Emily Marques invites audiences into a world of raw beauty and profound transformation with her latest contemporary art exhibition, Crash and Bloom. This deeply evocative collection explores the eternal rhythms of nature — the crashing of waves, the blooming of flowers — as metaphors for life’s cycles of destruction and regeneration.
The public are invited to join the artist for the official opening at Meta House on St 228, from 6pm on Monday, August 11.
Through an array of powerful visual works, Crash and Bloom embodies the tension between chaos and serenity. Each piece captures the dynamic motion of nature, highlighting how decay can give way to renewal. Marques draws from the visceral power of natural forces to remind us that growth often requires disruption — and that from brokenness, beauty can rise. Viewers are invited to witness not only the fragility of life but also its resilience, experiencing both rupture and healing in rhythmic harmony.
“Crash and Bloom is a meditation on the persistence of life,” says Marques. “Nature doesn’t stop when it’s broken. It reshapes, regrows and reemerges, often more vibrant than before.”

Originally from the US, Marques is an artist, teacher and performer whose multidisciplinary work spans nearly a decade in Cambodia. Her exhibitions include Afloat (2018), My Portal, My Abyss (2019), Srey Klang (2020), and her acclaimed solo debut Serendipitous by Nature (2023).
Her work has also been featured in national showcases such as the Apsara Dancing of Cambodia exhibition at the National Museum of Cambodia and the EKARIEACH exhibitions at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
A founding member of local collective The Community of Artists, Marques is passionate about collaboration and mutual inspiration. Her contributions to the Cambodian art scene have included work for charitable auctions alongside the Phnom Penh Players, as well as collective exhibitions like Nature Around Us (2020) and Colour in Motion (2022).
Crash and Bloom is more than an exhibition — it’s an invitation to reflect on life’s constant transformation. In a world filled with shifting tides, Marques serves the public a visual reminder that within every crash, there lies the seed of a bloom.
