Wheelchair provision in Cambodia is receiving a significant boost as the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation and a local NGO have renewed their commitment to assist those with mobility needs.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed recently between the ministry and the NGO – Association for Aids and Relief, Wheel Chair for Development (AAR, WCD) – marking the fourth such agreement, each lasting three years.
San Ratana, head of the AAR, WCD, explained the MoU’s objective.
“Our aim is to encourage the production, distribution and provision of wheelchairs in the capital and provinces,” Ratana said.
He revealed that over $200,000 would fund this cause, stressing the significance of these wheelchairs.
“Delivering these aids is essential, as many individuals would otherwise lack mobility assistance,” he said.
Ratana added that providing this assistance not only aids daily movement but is also vital for enriching their everyday lives.
“Our primary goal is making life easier for people with disabilities,” he emphasised.
Ratana also acknowledged the ministry – particularly its Department of Welfare for Disabled Persons – for their collaboration with organisations dedicated to upholding the rights of disabled individuals in Cambodia.
Furthermore, he noted the ministry’s continuous support and alignment with the government’s policy to bridge implementation gaps.
“Whenever we’ve partnered with organisations, the ministry has always offered encouragement and backing,” Ratana added.
Former Prime Minister Hun Sen has urged both state and private entities to uphold equality in the workplace.
He stressed that the proper execution of the National Disability Strategic Plan 2019-2023 is paramount, ensuring that no discrimination occurs against those with disabilities.
