At the 3rd Ministerial Meeting of the Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) Facility – a global mechanism that helps authorities in least-developed and developing countries access climate finance, capacity building and technical support – in the Belgian capital Brussels, Cambodia reiterated its continued support for LoCAL projects that would boost local economies.
Van Monineath, head of the Ministry of Environment’s General Department of Policy and Strategy, led the Cambodian delegation to the May 12 meeting.
Organised by the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the meeting was attended by 50 participants, including ministers and senior representatives from several member countries and development partners.
The ministry said the meeting participants approved a resolution of the 10th council on LoCAL and the Ministerial Declaration on LoCAL.
“Cambodia reiterated its support for the promotion of LoCAL, and hope it will become a more active mechanism to mobilise climate financing from the public and private sectors. Cambodia also welcomes the expansion of cooperation with all sides to implement local adaptation actions,” it added.
Senior officials from the policy and strategy department and delegates from sub-national administrations also attended the meeting, in order to gain a clearer understanding of LoCAL projects.
The National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) said climate change adaptation actions are important to improving community livelihoods, reforestation and improving the capacity of officials. It noted that such actions improved climate-resilient infrastructure and the management of plastic waste, while also raising awareness of climate change in the community and boosting family and community economies, as well as the growth of ecotourism.
