Through the National Committee for the Promotion of One Village One Product Movement (OVOP), the government urged the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and all relevant institutions, to work together to promote local products and source new markets.
Yim Chhay Ly, chairman of the committee, addressed the opening ceremony of the 6th National Day for the promotion of the use of Khmer products in Svay Rieng province on April 9, held with the theme “Buy Local to Create Jobs for Cambodians”.
Chhay Ly said that Prime Minister Hun Sen had provided several recommendations to encourage the processing of local raw materials into high quality goods that are suitable for domestic and export markets.
He suggested that the capital-provincial OVOP committees should work closely with the national OVOP committee to mobilise partners and exhibit local products.
“They should integrate themselves with any and all bodies that are working to improve people’s livelihoods through creating products that meet the needs of the market,” he said.
Bun Sieng, representative of the Natural Agriculture Village, who displayed her fruit and vegetables at the event, said exhibits like this one were an excellent opportunity to showcase the quality of locally made products to the public.
“My company never misses the chance to showcase our organic fruits and vegetables at these events, and I am seeing more and more Khmer goods on display. It is a source of pride to know that our goods are every bit the equal of imported ones,” she added.
The commerce ministry worked with the national and provincial OVOP committees to stage the event, held at Independence Park from April 9 to 13.
In addition to organising exhibitions, the national committee also arranges regular networking events for producers and wholesalers, along with some entertainment programmes.
