The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has urged the Kingdom’s farmers to transition to planting Phka Rumduol rice, a Cambodian variety, by establishing modern farming communities, rather than continuing to grow the OM rice variety from Vietnam. The goal is to ensure that rice prices remain stable for the long term and to avoid the kinds of price fluctuations that are currently being experienced. This push comes at a time when the price of OM rice has fallen to around 700,000 riel (about $175) per tonne. The registration of eight community forest areas, encompassing a total land area of 12,984 hectares, has been supported by the Tumring REDD+ Project. In addition, a 27,508-metre artificial boundary canal was excavated around the community forests last year. The registration and canal excavation aim to secure the forest lands, helping to protect them from illegal encroachment and prevent forest-related crimes, while reducing land disputes. The registered community forests have received legal certification and are clearly posted with signs informing the public that they are fully protected by forestry laws and land management regulations. The Tumring REDD+ Project, a collaborative initiative…

The call to action was sparked during a January 8 panel discussion on “the Role of Media and Opinion Leaders in Narrating ASEAN”. The discussions drew…
