The Ministry of Environment has ordered an immediate halt to the discharge of untreated liquid waste from a pig farm in Kampot province’s Teuk Chhou district. The farm’s operators have been fined for discharging into a public canal. On June 17, a working group from the ministry, joined by officials from the Kampot Department of Industry, Science and Innovation and local authorities, discovered water pollution in the O’Thom canal. The pollution was caused by wastewater from the So Savoeun pig farm, located in Kon Sat village. The pollution caused the death of several fish. Today, June 20, the ministry reported…

The recent skirmishes on Cambodia’s border with Thailand re-ignited a long simmering dispute over Cambodia’s borders, but as tragic and as provocative as they are, particularly with the preventable death of a Cambodian soldier, they are not the challenges to Cambodia’s sovereignty that we should fear. Cambodia’s sovereignty is far greater than isolated skirmishes and petty border disputes with its neighbours. Cambodians should feel proud and ever more confident in the leadership of the government that has exercised exceptional discipline, professionalism and strategic diplomacy in resolving the conflict in a way that works as best as it can toward peace…
Claims by a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson — that Cambodia’s use of social media platforms serves inflammatory purposes — are both unfounded and misleading. It is, in fact, certain Thai figures — particularly within the military and political establishment — who have repeatedly used social media and local media outlets to deflect responsibility and stir nationalist sentiment among the public. Instead of engaging constructively through diplomatic channels, these individuals have chosen to exploit digital platforms to propagate a one-sided narrative, distort facts and incite public emotion, often at the expense of truth and regional stability. This behaviour has fuelled dangerous…
Heavy rains have caused flooding in five provinces, with at least 927 hectares of rice fields damaged. Kampong Thom province reportedly suffered the worst flooding. On Thursday, June 19, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries reported that Takeo, Preah Vihear, Kampong Thom, Pursat and Banteay Meanchey were affected, with 813 hectares in Kampong Thom’s Prasat Sambor, Kampong Svay, Sandan, Stoung and Santuk districts damaged, as well as 114 hectares in Banteay Meanchey province. Agriculture ministry secretary of state Touch Bun Hour led a working group to inspect the flooding in Kampong Thom on June 18. According to the damage…
The Ministry of Environment signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to reinforce cooperation with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Cambodia on June 19. The new agreement aims to promote environmental protection, natural resource management and climate change response, in alignment with the government’s environmental sector strategic framework. The ministry also inked a separate MoU with NagaWorld. During the signing ceremonies, which were presided over by environment minister Eang Sophalleth, the signatories reaffirmed their commitment to advancing conservation efforts in line with Cambodia’s strategic goals for sustainability and green development. Chap Vibol, country director of WWF-Cambodia, said the MoU…
From the mountains of Bhutan to the shores of Tuvalu, countries across Asia and the Pacific are confronting a common challenge: transforming their agrifood systems to meet growing demands while safeguarding natural resources for future generations. I have seen this challenge firsthand in my discussions with the national leaders managing shrinking arable land and rising food prices, and in conversations with local communities whose livelihoods depend on increasingly fragile ecosystems. The pressures are real and mounting. Climate change, soil degradation, biodiversity loss and water scarcity are all putting an enormous strain on agrifood systems, the interconnected activities and actors involved…
Cambodia has begun employing drug dogs, as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to tackle the increasingly complex and dangerous drug challenges facing the world. On Wednesday, June 18, Lieutenant General Khoeng Sarath, director of the Anti-Drug Department, met with the canine unit and observed the drug-sniffing capabilities of five dogs at the Special Intervention Unit, located in Prek Eng commune, in Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov district. The drug-detection dogs, trained by the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), will be used in cooperation with the Special Intervention Unit to increase the efficiency of drug crime prevention and suppression efforts in Cambodia.…
I am a US attorney who has lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand for over two decades. I have witnessed political dissent and controversy on both sides of the borders. But I’ve always seen the love and respect for each others’ countries dominate to overcome. I am disheartened by the recent skirmishes and truly saddened by the unnecessary death of a Cambodian soldier who was a brother with ancestral ties to his brothers in Thailand. I am an independent lawyer with affinity and indebtedness to both Cambodia and Thailand for hosting me for 27 years. My sincere thanks to…
