A delegation of South Korean investors has expressed interest in exploring the possibility of establishing an electric motorcycle assembly plant in Cambodia, noting that the use of electric vehicles by Cambodians continues to rise, especially in the context of the global challenge of increasing fuel prices.
They would join a growing number of South Korean ebike assemblers, including Verywords, whose models are commonly seen on the Kingdom’s streets.
Youn Heng, deputy secretary-general of the Cambodian Investment Board (CIB), met with a Korean delegation of investors at the headquarters of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) on March 6.
The Korean delegation explained that they are particularly interested in the growing use of electric vehicles among the Cambodian population. Therefore, they are eager to study the investment potential and opportunities in Cambodia, particularly the establishment of a motorcycle assembly plant.
Heng informed the guests about the investment climate in Cambodia, highlighting the strong commitment of the Royal Government to attract and promote both domestic and foreign capital into the country. Cambodia is currently recognised as a potential destination for investment across many sectors, he noted.
Phon Rim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, explained that the development of electric vehicles (EVs)is a rapidly growing global trend. Their use provides numerous benefits in terms of environmental protection, economic development, energy security and the adoption of new technologies, in line with regional and global trends.
He noted that the National Policy on the Development of the Electric Vehicle Sector 2024–2030 serves as a roadmap and policy tool for the Royal Government to guide and promote the development of the EV sector in Cambodia.
“The government provides greater freedom and a wider range of choices for vehicle usage in order to facilitate travel, the transportation of goods and other services. In fact, the rate of EV usage has increased significantly, especially motorcycles and cars. Recently, the Electricity Authority of Cambodia encouraged investors holding electricity supply licenses to study the possibility of investing in electric vehicle charging stations, while also promoting further growth in the use of electric vehicles in Cambodia,” he said.
Cambodia already has several electric vehicle assembly plants, including Verywords and the Onion electric motorcycle and electric three-wheel vehicle assembly plant, a joint investment between local and Korean companies. In addition, Cambodia also has several electric car assembly plants, including BYD and ZO MOTORS (CAMBODIA) CO., LTD.
According to the transport ministry, by the end of 2025, Cambodia had 12,968 registered electric vehicles, including 9,065 cars, 3,203 motorcycles and 700 three-wheeled vehicles.
