Maritime cargo traffic between Cambodia and its international trading partners surged in 2025, with the number of containers passing through the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS) reaching over 1.3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), an increase of almost one third compared to 2024. Total cargo volume reached nearly 12 million tonnes.
The Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) -listed PAS reported that last year, total container throughput reached 1,347,726 TEUs, up 30.57%. The report noted that in the period from 2015 to 2025, the average growth rate stood at around 14%.
Meanwhile, total cargo volume reached 11,756,897 tonnes, an increase of 25.78%. The average growth rate for cargo volume from 2015 to 2025 was approximately 13%.
The data was shared by senior PAS representatives, during a visit by a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cambodia, along with journalists from an ODA Press Tour, at the port’s headquarters on the afternoon of March 23.
The meeting was attended by Phanna Veunida, deputy secretary-general of the Cambodian Development Cooperation Board of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), Matsuda Junsaku, counsellor of the embassy of Japan to Cambodia, and Yako Yoshito, senior representative of JICA in Cambodia.
PAS chairman Lou Kim Chhun noted that political stability and strong economic growth have helped drive continuous increases in Cambodia’s import and export activities, especially over the past two years.
He added that the port’s achievements — both past and future — would not be possible without the active support of the Japanese government through JICA, which has consistently provided technical assistance for port expansion as well as concessional financing for construction and capacity upgrades.
“The growth in import-export activities through Sihanoukville Autonomous Port reflects Cambodia’s strong economic progress. Currently, cargo handling operations at our port are running almost non-stop. This level of activity is expected to increase even further in 2026 and in the years ahead,” he said.
According to Chhun, in just the first nearly three months of 2026, container throughput has increased by approximately 38% compared to the same period in 2025.
