In every society, mental health and work are two inseparable threads woven into the fabric of our lives. Flourishing mental health at work fosters agility in shifting roles, facilitating personal growth, and honing stress management skills.

A vocation that fulfils personal passion can fuel growth and bolster mental well-being, driving individuals to reach their full potential. Interestingly, music has always been a pivotal tool in managing stress and enhancing mental health, making it the unsung hero in our lives, said an artist.

Van Ponlok is a 29-year-old artist who discovered the resonance of music as a force of positivity and an enhancer of mental health while pursuing his passion. Transitioning from a communication officer to a singer, Ponlok has truly epitomised this intricate balance.

Garnering experience from international organisations such as Room to Read, World Vision, and Helen Keller International, Ponlok has a rich professional background. However, the call of music, coupled with a desire to contribute positively to society, lured him away from a secure job into the unpredictable world of arts.

Ponlok’s lifelong affinity for music became the catalyst for his career shift. He envisions music as a beacon of positivity, intending to share this message amongst his audience.

“My ultimate goal is to contribute to society by radiating positivity and love through my music,” he shared.

Moreover, his belief in music as a powerful societal tool stems from his previous work experience.

“At times, it was challenging to effectively communicate campaign messages. Yet, I firmly believed in their importance in societal development,” Ponlok confessed.

Currently, Ponlok balances a dual role as a singer-songwriter with Rovul Records and co-founder of Se7en Studio. He stands firmly in his belief in music as an avenue with which to channel positivity and love.

“Music, to me, is a medium to both pursue my passion and spread love and positivity. It has the power to influence and engage people, especially the younger generation,” Ponlok said.

The notion of following one’s dreams also holds a significant place in his ethos. According to Ponlok, engagement in work that fosters love can inspire a commitment exceeding 100 per cent. This commitment facilitates the achievement of our goals and enhances mental health.

“Though my career change did present financial difficulties at first, it has significantly improved my mental health. I remain optimistic for the future,” he affirmed.

His family’s unwavering support was instrumental in his career transition. Ponlok aims to inspire self-love, positivity, and bold dream-chasing in both the public and younger generations.

“Chasing dreams can be arduous but rewarding. Careful planning and decision-making are key. Remember, greatness doesn’t come easily,” Ponlok noted.

As per the 2017 Health Achievement Report by the Ministry of Health, mental illnesses due to stress, sleep disorders, depression, chronic psychosis, and drug use are prevalent amongst Cambodians. Ponlok’s story serves as a beacon of hope and positivity amidst this crisis.
