A September 15 raid on the Hana Apartment building In Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district saw almost 50 individuals arrested for their parts in a suspected online scam operation. The majority of those detained were South Korean nationals.
The 1pm bust was conducted by a joint task force from the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, specialised police, district authorities, and representatives from the Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s Prosecutor’s Office.
The operation, in Sen Sok’s Kouk Khleang commune, saw 48 suspects from four nationalities taken into custody.
They included 33 South Koreans (5 females), one Nepalese (male), one Bangladeshi (male), and 13 Cambodians (5 females), explained the secretariat of the combatting online scam committee.
Authorities also seized 60 computers, 3 metal filing cabinets and 35 passports. The suspects and evidence were handed over to the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner for further legal proceedings.
Cambodia launched a nationwide campaign to eradicate technology-related fraud on July 14, with participation from ministries, institutions, sub-national authorities, and other relevant forces. The goal of the latest campaign is to prevent, suppress and combat technology-related fraud effectively, with the goal of maintaining public security, order and societal safety.
“Within the framework of this campaign to eliminate technology-related fraud, the joint forces will take the strictest legal measures against whoever is behind these fraudulent activities,” said the secretariat.
