An Austrian delegation has reportedly expressed strong interest in Cambodia’s tourism potential and is exploring the possibility of launching direct flights from Vienna to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, as both sides look to deepen cooperation in the tourism sector.

Minister of Tourism Hout Hak met with the Austrian representatives, including Andreas Sumper, deputy head of mission at the Austrian Embassy in Cambodia, Max Gridling, honorary consul of Austria, and Christian-Petru Ciochirca, CEO of Austrian promotional company M8 M8imize, on March 17 at the tourism ministry headquarters.

Sumper highlighted a recent Austrian trade mission that brought major companies from various sectors to Cambodia to study the country’s political, economic and social environment, as well as investment opportunities, particularly in tourism.

Ciochirca shared his company’s experience in organising international sporting events, noting that such activities could help promote Cambodia as a tourism destination.

The minister expressed his appreciation to the delegation for their visit, highlighting Cambodia’s steady development across multiple sectors.

“Thanks to peace and political stability, Cambodia offers strong investment opportunities and tourism potential — like a ‘rising star’ attracting international investors and tourists,” he said.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening and expanding tourism cooperation, including developing Cambodia’s tourism and hospitality industries, while also reviewing the feasibility of direct flights from Vienna.

The tourism ministry noted that the discussions were productive and highlighted a shared determination to boost collaboration and connectivity between the two countries.

Cambodia and Austria have maintained diplomatic relations since 1956, with cooperation across multiple sectors including tourism investment. In early 2026, more than 2,000 Austrian tourists visited the Kingdom.
