Cambodia has expressed its support for tomorrow’s Joint General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, with hopes that an immediate ceasefire will be on the table.

In a December 22 statement to Thai Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit, who serves as the Thai co-chairman of the GBC, Minister of National Defence Tea Seiha reaffirmed “Cambodia’s commitment to dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law amid ongoing border tensions”.

ASEAN rotating chair Malaysia hosted yesterday’s ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand, where Wednesday’s GBC meeting was agreed to.

According to Seiha’s letter to his Thai counterpart, Cambodia suggested some key agenda items.

They include an immediate cessation of all hostilities and full respect for and implementation of the ceasefire agreement of July 28, as well as the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration of October 26, and other agreements reached under the same framework.

Other priority agenda include the safe and dignified return, without obstruction, of civilians from affected border areas to their homes, as well as the reactivation of border demarcation and humanitarian demining measures.
