Police will begin strengthening law enforcement activities in the capital from October 18 onwards to increase security, public order and safety ahead of the November 10-13 ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

Municipal police spokesman San Sokseyha said the stepped-up efforts came a day after Phnom Penh governor Khuong Sreng convened a meeting instructing them to search out weapons and explosives through administrative inspections on a daily basis in the capital’s more complex and vulnerable areas, especially near the delegates’ accommodation and the meeting venues.

“Regarding our deployment plans, we have a lot of methods we can use, such as administrative inspections, weapon and explosive checks, drug and alcohol traffic control points, and other legal restrictions we can impose in order to prevent various problems from occurring,” Sokseyha said.

At the October 17 meeting, Sreng urged all 14 district administrations and relevant authorities to pay close attention to maintaining security, public order and safety as the leaders of some of the most powerful nations will convene in Cambodia for the summit.

Sreng said authorities must be serious about protecting the ASEAN delegates, with the municipal hall taking ultimate responsibility for their security.

“This work will start from tomorrow [October 18]. Deploy patrol forces and check for weapons and explosives and conduct administrative inspections every day in complex and vulnerable areas, especially near the residences of the delegates and at the meeting venues,” he said.

He added that all departments must also pay attention to the work within their jurisdictions to ensure that they perform well during the summit.

At the same time, Sreng also instructed the Department of Public Works and Transport to repair potholes and damaged roads that the delegates will travel on in order to make Phnom Penh more attractive.
