The Japanese government has adjusted the amount of grant aid it will provide for the “Expansion of the Water Supply System in Ta Khmao” project, adding an additional $1 million to the previous assistance.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation explained that foreign minister Prak Sokhonn and Japanese ambassador Ueno Atsushi signed an exchange of notes on the grant amendment today, March 19.

The ministry noted the increase will boost the grants provided for the project, first signed in March 2020, from approximately $22 million to around $23 million.

“This additional grant assistance reflects Japan’s steadfast commitment to advancing Cambodia’s socio-economic development, while further strengthening the bilateral cooperation under the Cambodia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” said the statement.

Phnom Penh and Ta Khmao have a combined population of approximately 3 million people, with clean water supply coverage reaching more than 90 per cent of residents. The government plans to achieve 100 per cent water supply coverage for both cities by 2028, according to Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.
