The Deputy Minister of National Defence of Laos has shared how his nations military will strive to cultivate closer relations with their Cambodian counterparts, noting that both neighbouring nations will continue to cooperate to maintain a peaceful and secure border.

Deputy defence minister Saichay Kommasith, Chief of General Staff of the Lao People’s Army, paid a courtesy call on Senate president Hun Sen on February 17. During the discussions, he highlighted the excellent cooperation between the armies of both countries.

Chea Thyrith, Senate spokesperson, explained that Hun Sen considered the visit “an important impetus for promoting bilateral relations between Cambodia and Laos, and especially to deepen the cooperative relations between the armies of both countries”.

Kommasith noted that Laos and Cambodia have good relations, including in the military sector, and pledged to strive to further cultivate and develop relations between the armies of both countries, according to Thyrith.

He explained that Cambodia and Laos have a peaceful and secure border thanks to strong cooperation between the two countries, including their armed forces.

During his mission to Cambodia, Kommasith met with the Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, and Minister of National Defense Tea Seiha to discuss the implementation of a plan to expand bilateral relations within the framework of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and the Lao People’s Army.

Hun Sen urged the strengthening of defence cooperation, and the expansion of mutual experience sharing and human resource training.

He called for the authorities and militaries of both countries to work together to maintain peace and security along the border more effectively and to jointly combat cross-border crime, as well as manage natural disasters such as floods and fires.
