Prime Minister Hun Manet condemned the use of violence by Thai forces against Cambodian civilians in Prey Chan village this evening, November 12. Thai forces reportedly opened fire on tent shelters, resulting in the death of a Cambodian civilian and at least three injuries.
The casualty figure was revised down from the five quoted in a preliminary report.
Manet described the Thai actions as contrary to the humanitarian spirit, as well as previous agreements on resolving border issues peacefully, particularly the agreement to allow the Joint Border Committee (JBC) to conduct surveys and install temporary boundary markers, while maintaining the status quo until the survey is completed.
“I urge the Thai side to immediately cease the use of force against innocent Cambodian civilians in Prey Chan village, as well as the use of force in resolving border issues between the two countries,” he said, via social media.
“I call for an independent investigation into this incident and appeal for the involvement of expert foreign parties to seek the truth and deliver justice to the citizens harmed by this shooting,” he added.
Manet urged local authorities and competent forces to take measures to protect the Kingdom’s citizens, with careful consideration for their safety.
“Cambodia maintains its stance on resolving issues peacefully, in accordance with the spirit of the Joint Declaration of Kuala Lumpur on October 26, in order to move toward ending the conflict and building peace between the two countries,” he added.
