Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will attend a special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand on December 22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, according to a December 21 foreign ministry press release.
The meeting is being convened following a decision by the prime ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand on December 11, as tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border continue to draw regional attention.
“The special meeting will discuss the recent development of the current situation with a view to fostering mutual understanding and confidence, promoting de-escalation of tensions and restoring peace, stability and good neighbourly relations,” according to the ministry.
It explained that Cambodia will use the platform to reaffirm its firm position that all differences and disputes must be resolved through peaceful means, dialogue and diplomacy, in line with international law, the UN Charter and the ASEAN Charter.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Sokhonn is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with his ASEAN counterparts to further strengthen cooperation and advance confidence-building measures, the statement added.
The participation of Cambodia in the special ASEAN meeting reflects the Royal Government’s commitment to peace, security and prosperity in the region, while underscoring its support for ASEAN centrality and unity, it continued.
The meeting comes amid heightened regional scrutiny of the Cambodia–Thailand situation, with ASEAN increasingly seen as a key platform for managing tensions and preventing further escalation through diplomatic engagement.
