Minister of Interior Sar Kheng has advised the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration to take action to prevent people from constructing buildings without a permit on public lands and pavements that are detrimental to the community’s appearance and to public order.
Presiding over a March 10 meeting to review the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration’s work results for 2022 and its work direction for 2023, Sar Kheng said that Phnom Penh is the nation’s main economic hub and it attracts investments from local and foreign investors who are developing the real estate sector, production and services.
The pace of urban development in the capital has recently accelerated, despite the spread of Covid-19 and the effects of a changing world situation, he said..
“Along with these rapid developments, we also noted some challenges related to environmental quality, sanitation, urban aesthetics and traffic jams,” he added.
He continued that to ensure the sustainable development of Phnom Penh and maintain public order and the city’s beauty, the administration must strengthen the management of all types of construction under the law on construction and other relevant legal documents and technical standards.
He said the administration must also strictly implement the land use master plan of Phnom Penh to ensure high quality, public safety, beauty, public order and a good environment.
Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Khuong Sreng said at the meeting that authorities and police officers within their purview and other relevant authorities had made every effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and maintain security and order for the people as well.
He highlighted the many projects helping to turn Phnom Penh into a more civilised city by providing training courses and improving delivery of services to people and the many sites under construction for roads, pipelines, flyovers and other achievements.
“However, despite these achievements and works, we still have some work to do and some challenges. So, it is necessary for the Council and the Board of Governors of Phnom Penh to prepare topics for discussion at this year’s meeting,” he stated.
