US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a phone conversation with Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn this evening, Sunday, July 27. He urged the Cambodian government to deescalate tensions and agree to a ceasefire with Thailand amid the ongoing border dispute.
State department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that Rubio highlighted US President Donald Trump’s strong desire for a peaceful resolution, reiterating the importance of an immediate ceasefire to prevent further escalation.
The ongoing border dispute has raised serious concerns about regional stability.
“The US is prepared to facilitate future discussions to ensure peace and stability between Thailand and Cambodia,” Bruce said, explaining Washington’s readiness to mediate and support diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
The state department has not yet announced specific plans for mediation but affirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue between the two nations.
The call came just a day after Trump held a phone conversation with Manet, during which Manet expressed Cambodia’s determination to reach a ceasfire agreement with Thailand a soon as possible.
