The 10th Angkor Empire Marathon 2025 in Siem Reap has been postponed indefinitely, with a reversal of this morning’s announcement that it would go ahead as originally planned, on August 3.
Many of the domestic and international runners who are registered for the event requested that the Cambodian National Olympic Committee (NOCC) continue to postpone the event, despite the unconditional ceasefire which took effect at midnight last night, said NOCC secretary general Vath Chamroeun.
“The national Olympic committee would like to inform all national and international runners that the 10th Angkor Empire Marathon, scheduled for August 3, 2025, in the Angkor area, will proceed as planned, as the border situation has now been stabilised. We celebrate this development and hope to see strong participation from all runners, both local and international,” said the NOCC, in their original 8am statement. However, this was reversed just two hours later, at 10am.
Chamroeun explained that the marathon would be postponed again — this time in response to feedback from runners who requested a delay until there is 100% clarity and certainty regarding the security situation.
“This morning, the NOCC announced preparations for the 10th Angkor Empire Marathon on August 3. But now, based on input from the public and over 4,000 registered runners, we’ve received a clear call to delay the event,” he said.
“Therefore, as the Olympic committee and organising committee, we are now officially announcing that the 10th Angkor Empire Marathon will be postponed. A new date will be announced later by the NOCC,” he added.

Chamroeun issued an apology to the public and to all runners for the earlier announcement which had reinstated the August 3 event, only for it to be postponed again.
“We apologise for the premature announcement earlier this morning,” he said.
“It came after some opinions had suggested resuming the event following improved border conditions. But now, we are respectfully following the majority opinion from the public and runners, who have requested a postponement so that the event can be held at a more appropriate and secure time in the future,” he continued.
