Five of the Kingdom’s strongest Kun Khmer exponents – Pich Sambath, Pich Bunsith, Lon Panha , Amarin Phuthong and Koeum Sovankhy – are currently applying for Australian visas. The five are scheduled to take part in a combination of international friendly matches and title fights at an early November event.
The competition is being staged by the recently licensed Kun Khmer Super Fight club, which was established to train fighters and send them abroad to compete.
The club’s Nou Pov explained that even before they were licensed, Super Fight has sent boxers to several tournaments in Thailand. It also worked with the Kun Khmer All Stars club to stage a June event in Paris, France.
Pov added that Super Fight’s founder, Soeur Vannak, is working with Australia’s Best of the Best promotions team, and that the two organisations have already secured two major sponsors.
The boxers are now awaiting the results of their visa applications at the Australian embassy in Phnom Penh.
“We are cooperating with the Best of the Best team, which has hosted several successful boxing events in Australia. We have received formal letters of invitation and prepared all of the correct paperwork, so we are just waiting for the visas to be approved,” said Pov.
“Once we receive them, our delegation will travel to Australia on November 1, ahead of the November 5 event,” he added.
He explained that the fight promoters would confirm the weight classes – and possible belts that will up for grabs – in the near future.
“The main goal of Kun Khmer Super Fight is to not just promote our sport domestically, but to send our fighters to compete overseas and promote Kun Khmer on the international stage,” said club founder Vannak.
“Our collaboration with Best of the Best marks a huge milestone for us. We will be working with a world class television station – Fox Sports – to broadcast the event live, so this is an amazing promotional opportunity. We want the world to become more aware of Kun Khmer, which is a proud part of our ancestral legacy,” he added.
