The 11th International Half Marathon in Sihanoukville has set a new record, attracting approximately 15,000 participants, surpassing all previous iterations of the past 10 years. The surge in participation is expected to play a key role in promoting tourism and showcasing the province’s beautiful coastline to the world.

Originally, organisers had expected only around 2,500, based on participation levels from previous events. They even projected it would take another 3 to 5 years to surpass 10,000 runners.

However, the March 22 event exceeded expectations, drawing 15,000 runners from 41 countries — a figure that surprised many.

Participation was noticeably high in the 10km, 5km and 3km fun runs, with thousands joining, particularly students and workers. Meanwhile, the 21km half marathon saw only a few hundred registered participants.

Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), expressed surprise at the massive turnout. He noted that this year’s event introduced a new coastal running route of nearly 20km, which significantly increased its appeal.

In addition, local authorities and stakeholders mobilised strong participation from students, residents, civil servants and workers across the province, contributing to the record-breaking turnout.

“This is an unprecedented figure and a new record in the event’s 10-year history. The improved route along the coastline provided participants with a fresh experience and brought smiles to everyone involved,” he said.

Following this success, organizers expressed hope that future editions will attract even more participants — particularly international athletes — seeking a unique running experience along one of the region’s most picturesque coastlines. The NOCC is also considering expanding the event into a full marathon (42km) in the future.

Mang Sineth, governor of Preah Sihanouk province, welcomed the success of the event, noting its importance in promoting the province — especially its coastline — on the global stage.

He added that the event brought joy, smiles, happiness and unforgettable memories to all participants, and that the strong turnout also reflected a sense of national unity and spirit during challenging times.

“This event strengthens patriotism, self-reliance and ownership in building and protecting our nation. It will also help boost tourism in Sihanoukville, making it a safe, attractive destination filled with warmth and smiles,” he said.
