A concrete wall along a stream in Takeo province has been demolished, following an order from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology. The 148-metre wall along the Slakou Stream, in Trapaing Pur village, of Tram Kak district’s Cheang Tong commune, was the subject of several public complaints. Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology Thor Chetha inspected the site this morning, October 13, and determined that it breached laws governing the distance from shorelines and riverbanks for such structures. Senior Minister Ly Thuch, first vice-president of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), has requested that France resume its support for humanitarian demining efforts in Cambodia, just as it did during the UNTAC era. The request was made during a working meeting between Thuch and French ambassador Olivier Richard, today, October 13. Thuch noted that France had previously provided demining training to the Cambodian during the time of UNTAC. According to reliable sources, the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) has agreed in principle to schedule a special JBC meeting for October 21-22. The special meeting will be hosted by Thailand, and aims to continue discussions and push forward the work of demarcation and border marker placement along the Cambodian-Thai border, as agreed during the 6th JBC, hosted by Cambodia in Phnom Penh on June 14 and 15.
The government announced that since the April 2024 implementation of the Family Package Social Assistance Programme, it has allocated more than $180 million to support the Kingdom’s most vulnerable. Environmental rangers are removing illegal structures from the Preah Soramrit Kosamak Kirirom National Park. The buildings, in Chambok commune of Kampong Speu province’s Phnom Sruoch district, were discovered in September. The authorities are attempting to identify the person behind the construction. Rangers from the Kirirom National Park office, under the Kampong Speu provincial environment department, have also removed boundary marker posts, mesh fencing and 20 coconut trees that were planted by the offenders. A new sewer network and wastewater treatment station in Kampong Chhnang town — part of the Tonle Sap Basin Urban Environmental Management Improvement Project — was officially inaugurated today, October 10. The system can treat more than 5,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day. The APSARA National Authority (ANA) has identified 4,264 illegal structures across 114 villages within the Angkor Archaeological Park over the past year. According to an October 9 statement from the Siem Reap provincial pdministration, a report from the ANA showed that from August 2024 to the end of August this year, illegal construction activities have continued to spread throughout the 27 communes of six districts and towns.
