Each year, World Environment Day urges us to reflect – and act – on the sustainability challenges we face together. This year, on June 5, under the leadership of hosts South Korea, the world reaffirms its commitment to ending plastic pollution. Plastic waste has infiltrated every corner of the planet: it leaches into our water, contaminates our food and even enters our bodies. Yet, while the scale of the problem is vast, plastic pollution remains one of today’s most solvable environmental challenges – especially with the right mix of technical solutions and financial innovation. For decades, plastic has symbolised modern…

“Beat Plastic Pollution” is the chosen theme for tomorrow’s National Environment Day, as well as World Environment Day, which also falls on June 5. Cambodia, like the rest of the world, is experiencing rising concerns over the increase and impact of plastic waste. Ministry of Environment spokesperson Khvay Atitya said the theme was selected in line with global trends and Cambodia’s own growing challenges with plastic waste, which has become a serious issue. “Plastic pollution doesn’t just affect the beauty of our cities and rural areas, but also causes severe harm to the environment, ecosystems, public health and the national…
Members of the Senate and National Assembly have urged the government to inspect the quality of imported chemical fertilisers and fruit seeds, while encouraging farmers to expand organic farming operations to protect public health. During a June 3 joint session of the National Assembly and Senate, Senator Mong Reththy called on the government to examine the quality of the fertilisers and fruit seeds being imported from neighbouring countries. “Please help inspect imported fertilisers, especially their quality. Don’t allow low-quality fertilisers to be sold to our farmers, which end up being used in fields and result in low yields and high…
Master San Kim Sean, a renowned proponent of the Kun Lbokator martial art, passed away this afternoon, June 3, after suffering a heart attack. He was 80 years old. As part of its commitment to contributing to a global response to climate change, Cambodia has approved the Dushanbe Glaciers Declaration – a call for member states and stakeholders of the UN to take action to protect glaciers. This approval took place as Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth led a Cambodian delegation — on behalf of Prime Minister Hun Manet — to the International Conference on Glacier Preservation in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from May 29 to 31. The conference, attended by over 2,000 participants from 60 countries, aimed to strengthen international cooperation and promote a global agenda for glacier conservation. Upon…
Russia and North Korea have maintained long diplomatic relations with each other. However, the relations reached their lowest point shortly after Kim Jong Un became North Korea’s supreme leader in 2011, mainly because of the regime’s violation of international law and norms by developing nuclear weapons and testing missiles. Though Russia still maintained a certain level of relations with Pyongyang, Moscow tried not to show any inclination or support toward North Korea. For instance, Russia was not reluctant in supporting the US resolution in condemning and imposing sanctions against North Korea prior to 2020. In December 2017, Russia supported UNSC…
Solar energy in Cambodia is an evolving sector increasingly viewed as integral to the country’s energy strategy and climate change mitigation efforts. With solar power now constituting approximately 7 per cent of Cambodia’s energy mix — up from zero capacity in 2011 — the nation is beginning to harness its abundant sunlight and high solar irradiance to diversify its energy sources, which have historically been dominated by hydropower and non-renewable fuels. The rapid growth in solar energy adoption is underscored by the government’s ambitious plans to increase its share to nearly 30 per cent by 2040, as outlined in the…
The Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression Directorate-General (CCF) of the Ministry of Commerce has clarified that a brand of rapid test kit which is currently being sold online cannot detect banned chemicals, including agricultural toxins or prohibited colouring substances. The clarification was made on Monday, June 2, following recent social media claims that the rapid test kits can detect harmful chemicals that pose a risk to consumer health in fruit and vegetables, supposedly determining whether they are safe to consume. The CCF stated that the function of the kits is limited to measuring the amount of nitrate found in…
In the first five months of the year, Cambodia recorded 20 casualties of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), marking a 33 per cent decrease compared to the same period in 2024, when 30 people fell victim to the hidden reminders of the Kingdom’s violent past. Lang Kosal, spokesman for the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) told The Post that of the 20 victims this year, eight were harmed by landmines and 12 by ERWs. Among them were five boys and one girl under the age of 18. Six people were killed in the incidents, while…
