Suspended Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been found guilty of violating the constitution and was dismissed from her position by a ruling of the Constitutional Court this afternoon, August 29.
Before armed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand broke out, she held a telephone conversation with Cambodian Senate president Hun Sen. The contents of the call were leaked and it became public knowledge that she had referred to the commander of Thailand’s Second Army Region, General Boonsin Padkhlang, as being “not aligned with her side”.
The Constitutional Court noted that the then-prime minister had openly communicated with Cambodian leaders and granted advantages to them without taking into account Thailand’s national security, in what was seen as an attempt to maintain her own popularity.
The court judged that her critical remarks about the Thai military commander were made for personal gain over national interests.
