Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng has urged the authorities in all 14 of the capital’s districts to encourage the public to plant trees.
On August 11, he set the target of planting at least 200 trees in each district, saying that all the authorities must care for the trees.
Having planted the trees, the authorities should issue reports every three months, detailing the progress of each tree, and including plans to re-plant any that have not survived. In this way, he aims to make Phnom Penh greener and more beautiful.
The calls followed Sreng’s attendance of July 9 Arbor Day celebrations on the grounds of Tronum Chreung Primary School in Boeng Thom commune, of the capital’s Kamboul district.
Sreng said that the tree-planting ceremony inspired him to encourage more tree planting activities across Phnom Penh.
“Forests have many benefits, such as providing habitats for wildlife, producing oxygen, and combating climate change. The forests are priceless, so we have to preserve them,” he added.
The Phnom Penh municipal administration has prepared 3,500 saplings of many different varieties, which will be distributed so the public can plant them across the city.
