The number of deaths from an accident involving a sleeper bus belonging to Virak Rithy Transport, which plunged off a bridge in Kampong Thom province into a river, has risen to 16, after three more bodies were recovered — including that of the scheduled bus driver, who was not behind the wheel.
Kakoh commune police chief Bit Bunthoeun stated on Friday morning that the bodies of two more passengers and the driver were found on the evening of Thursday, November 20, in the stream where the accident took place.
“Three more bodies have been found. All of them were still strapped inside the bus. This brings the total number of deaths to 16, with 24 injured. We are still inspecting the scene in case more bodies surface,” he said.
The double-decker bus, traveling from Oddar Meanchey to Phnom Penh via Siem Reap, plunged off the O’Prasat bridge in Kakoh commune, Santuk district, at 3.20am on Thursday, November 20. Initially, 13 passengers were reported dead and 24 injured, 14 of them seriously.
The crash occurred after the assistant driver took over the wheel from the main driver and fell asleep, according to the police. The assistant driver, who is now confirmed among the injured, is under guard while he receives treatment in hospital.
Authorities further stated that Virak Rithy Transport did not have an accurate passenger manifest, and some travellers may have boarded at various points along the route.
Following the accident, a representative of Virak Rithy Transport offered one million riel (approximately $250) in funeral assistance for each victim and promised further compensation through the company’s insurance provider.
Minister of Interior Sar Sokha expressed deep sorrow and shock over the tragic incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of all victims.
“This devastating disaster is a painful reminder to all of us of the value of life and the importance of respecting traffic laws. Many traffic accidents are preventable if all road users act with greater responsibility,” he said.
He appealed to all citizens to comply with traffic laws, recommending that they do not drive over the speed limit or while intoxicated, as alcohol impairs judgment and control. They should wear helmets or seatbelts, should not overtake recklessly and must keep to the right at all times, he added.
He noted that to prevent future tragedies, the authorities — especially traffic police and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport — must continue strengthening enforcement, education campaigns, vehicle inspections and improvements to transport infrastructure.
“Obeying traffic laws is not just about avoiding fines or pleasing authorities — it is about protecting your own life and safety. Always remember: Don’t rush! Arriving slowly means arriving safely — back to your family,” said the minister.
