The National Election Committee (NEC) has confirmed that the first seven days of the 21-day election campaign period have proceeded smoothly and orderly, with no incidents of violence or insecurity reported.
The campaign period commenced on July 1 and is set to continue through July 21. Following this, July 22, known as ‘white day’, will mark a pause in all campaign activities in the lead-up to the general election scheduled for July 23.
This election, set to be a significant political event, will see 18 political parties vying for electoral favour.
According to the NEC’s update on July 7, only two political parties – the Khmer Nationality Party and The Beehive Social Democratic Party – have actively campaigned on July 7. Their efforts have spanned Kampong Speu and Tbong Khmum, and Battambang, respectively.
In addition to these two parties, the NEC noted that several other parties have also initiated their campaign efforts on a smaller scale. These activities include broadcasting their policies via loudspeakers at their offices, distributing leaflets door-to-door, and displaying banners along the roads.
Providing an update on his party’s activities, Nhoeun Raden, a spokesperson for Funcinpec, stated that the party has conducted campaigns in the capital and in nine other provinces to date. He commended the peaceful nature of the campaign, emphasising the effective facilitation by local authorities.
Looking ahead, the NEC has announced plans for a meeting with relevant stakeholders on July 11. The purpose of this meeting will be to evaluate the overall campaign situation and discuss the security conditions at each voting station.
Through these concerted efforts, the NEC aims to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election process.
